Dear Kol Rinah Family,
I am so excited for this Shabbat at Kol Rinah! Keep reading for all the exciting things happening!
But first, I want to thank our member Rena Munster for speaking beautifully and movingly last Shabbat morning, sharing her experiences of volunteering recently in Israel. You can read or watch her words.
I also want to say mazal tov again to Hattie Scharff on her bat mitzvah last Shabbat afternoon. Mazal tov also to her parents, Daniel Scharff and Lilly Scharff, as well to her siblings, Teddy and Andy!
Two podcasts I've recommended before about Israel and the war in Gaza were especially good this week. Yehuda Kurtzer reflected on his most recent trip to Israel, the third of three trips since October 7, about what it means to listen, and about some of the disconnects he's hearing between Americans and Israelis. And in the context of the food crisis in Gaza, Rabbi Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi "examine the struggle in Israeli society to engage in moral discourse and the growing chasm between the Israeli and Jewish diaspora’s responses to the war."
On to this Shabbat. I'm SO EXCITED because we'll welcome Dr. Mara Benjamin as our scholar-in-residence. She'll be teaching and speaking over Shabbat on "Climate Change, Climate Catastrophe: Exploring the Limits of Jewish Wisdom," sponsored by the Leo and Sara Wolf Adult Education Fund.
She's working on creative Jewish theology that will respond to and take climate change and climate catastrophe seriously. This, I think, will be the first synagogue she's teaching this material at, so we'll be getting the most modern modern Jewish thought and theology there is!
Tonight, candle lighting is at 5:44pm.
We'll gather for a musical Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv at 6pm, led by Karen Kern, Will Soll and me.
Dinner (for those who signed up) will follow.
At around 8:20pm, Dr. Benjamin will teach on "Looking Forward to an Uncertain Future: Jewish Imaginings of What's Coming"--even if you're not coming for services or dinner, you're welcome to come for the learning!
Saturday morning, we'll begin at 9am.
It's Shabbat Shekalim, the first of four special Shabbatot leading up to Pesach.
I'll be leading Torah Talk at 10:10am, where we'll look at the prohibition against kindling fire on Shabbat (Exodus 35:3).
Tot Shabbat with Karen Kern will be at 10:45am.
Dr. Benjamin will speak during services at about 11:10am, and she will also lead Musaf.
Kiddush follows services, and at about 12:30pm, Dr. Benjamin will teach again, on
"Looking Back to a Ruptured Past: Remembering What Once Was."
Shabbat ends at 6:43pm.
Saturday night, don't forget to change your clocks, and set them ahead an hour--"Spring Forward"--for Daylight Savings Time.
Sunday morning, starting at 9:15am in the Sanctuary, the learning will continue. Dr. Benjamin will be teaching on "Childrearing and Religious Experience in Judaism." Anyone who has ever been a child or a parent, or will ever be--this is for you!
Sunday afternoon, Ralph Graff will be honored as the Kol Rinah Brotherhood's Man of the Year, and Rebekah Simmons and Grace Cooperstein will be honored as Youths of the Year, all at the Man of the Year luncheon at B'nai Amoona. Mazal tov!
Tuesday, March 12 is the deadline to sign up for the Green Purim Bash on Sunday, March 17. It'll be a fun, musical, delicious way to get into the Purim spirit. Join us! All the Purim details are here.
One note about minyan--I know a few regulars are away this week. If you can make it to minyan in person this Thursday morning at 7am, your presence will be *especially* appreciated!
Next Friday night, March 15 at 6pm, as part of our Friday night service, we'll welcome Jewish Girl Scouts from around the region for Girl Scout Shabbat. Come join us and welcome them to Kol Rinah!
The next meeting of our Grief Havurah, led by Rabbi Jessica Shafrin, will be on Wednesday, March 20 at 6:30pm. All are welcome.
